Winter Cocktail Party Style
The approaching winter ushers in a season of celebrations. I’m sharing styling tips that guarantee you’ll master winter soiree style.
My December social calendar is peppered with a variety of social events, providing me numerous opportunities to wear my more refined clothing and accessories. I appreciate any chance to dress up, although I acknowledge that it can be tricky to balance the desire to look stylish with the need to stay warm at this time of year. This challenge becomes more pronounced when it comes to dressing for cocktail parties where suitable ensembles often involve short hemlines and high heels – choices that are not the most practical for December’s cold temperatures and precipitation. Over the years, I’ve found ways to navigate this delicate balance. Below, I share five styling tips to master winter cocktail party dressing:
1. Consider fabric weight
While winter party clothing might bare some skin, choosing the right fabric can help keep you warm. Heavier fabrics like jacquards, tweeds or velvets not only provide insulation but also lend a luxurious and seasonally appropriate feel to your outfit.
I have shared several dress options on Instagram that fit the bill, including distinct recommendations for women with winter, spring, summer, and autumn coloring. Resources abound for determining your most flattering colors, and I’m happy to share them. Reach out if you need guidance.
2. Add tights
Apart from providing extra warmth, tights offer an opportunity to introduce patterns and textures to your look. If your dress is a solid color, consider opting for patterned tights to add a touch of visual interest.

3. Wear a dressy coat or jacket
Because it is what you arrive in, your outer layer is just as important as your outfit underneath. Match the formality of your outerwear to your outfit for a cohesive and polished appearance. Long wool or cashmere coats exude elegance and are ideal for formal gatherings. Faux fur, real vintage fur, or beaded evening jackets add a touch of glamour to your look.

4. Enjoy your jewelry
Your accessories, including your shoes, bag, and jewelry, should harmonize with the formality of your overall look. Cocktail parties present ideal opportunities to enjoy any fine jewelry you've collected over the years. After all, they're called cocktail rings for a reason, right? Of course, adding a touch of whimsy with affordable costume jewelry is also an option, and there are plenty of excellent pieces on the market.
The holidays invite you to elevate your accessory game. While lightweight beads and shells may be perfect for summer, the festive atmosphere of the holidays allows for a touch more grandeur. It's the perfect time to pull out the chandelier earrings, showcase juicy gems, or dazzle with crystals (or diamonds!) for that extra touch of glamour.

5. Leave the sports watch home
While the functionality of a sports watch can be useful for every day wear, festive occasions, especially during the holiday season, call for more refined accessories. Leave your sports watch at home and opt for a timepiece that complements the formality of your party look or leave your wrist unadorned. Don’t worry - you’re getting the steps you need just by mingling with other partygoers.
These tips are your ticket to both style and warmth. Now, step out and embody them—share a warm smile, relish the company of friends, and extend a helping hand to your party hosts when appropriate.
